Education
Children of Walnut Grove receive their education through the prestigious Vancouver School District. The District houses two pre-schools, 21 elementary schools, six middle schools and five high schools. The District is also home to a number of specialty programs, such as GATE, the Personalized Learning Center and the Vancouver Early Childhood Center. Many higher educational facilities thrive in the area as well. Clark College, which is located in Vancouver, provides a steady education toward one’s Associate’s/Bachelor’s degree, as well as many degrees in technical programs. Everest College also offers many technical certificates, as does DeVry University.
Attractions
History lovers will adore Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. Nestled outside the metropolitan sites of Vancouver, this impressive fort holds some of the best archaeological sites in the world. The fort includes educational films and exhibits, as well as a reconstructed 19th century fort. Children will adore the hands-on exhibit in the Fort, which features an introduction to archaeology as well as tales of what it was like for children to live in the fort. The Fort is indeed an ideal visit for those who crave a bit of history, especially those who really like to experience it.
The Vancouver Wine and Jazz Festival is a must-see for visitors and locals alike. This expansive festival takes place every August and is home to some of the best wine and jazz that the Northwest has to offer. Fine Art is also offered at the Festival, as well as fine cuisine. The Festival was established to promote downtown Vancouver, as well as the performing arts and culture. The Festival also prides itself on entertaining thousands with delightful jazz, food and drink. It is indeed a celebration in which one can eat, drink and be merry!
Pearson Air Museum, which is located at Fort Vancouver, is described as the perfect opportunity to discover ‘the golden age of aviation.’ This innovative experience features wild barnstormers, experimental aircraft, and fighter planes from WWI and WWII. The museum also sits next to Pearson Air Field, which is the oldest operating airfield in the country. One of the most popular exhibits is the Pearson Field Historic Hangar. The Hangar was built in 1918 as part of the Army Spruce Division’s cut-up plant, the largest in the world. The Museum is also home to a number of events and educational activities which are held throughout the year.
Parks and Recreation
There is hardly a shortage of outdoor activities in or near Walnut Grove. In Vancouver, which is only a short drive away from Walnut Grove, Club Green Meadows remains the largest private recreational facility in the Northwest. This phenomenal facility features an 18-hole championship golf course, an indoor golf course practice range, three basketball courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a bowling center with eight lanes, seven indoor tennis courts, one outdoor tennis court, a walking track, a full fitness center, nine squash courts, seven racquet ball courts, conference rooms and a full service restaurant and lounge. Club Green Meadows is applauded as the premiere recreational facility.
Esther Short Park is a delightful park located in Vancouver. The oldest park in the state of Washington, this park was originally designed after Lafayette Park in St. Louis. The park is home to a stunning rose garden, children’s playground, a breathtaking fountain and a clock tower. The park also holds an annual farmer’s market every weekend. It is an ideal spot for a picnic, stroll or to gather a little peace of mind.
Salmon Creek Park is another favorite park among the locals of the greater Vancouver area. Built in 2003, the grounds sprawl out to include a vast playground, soccer fields, a lovely pond that is ideal for fishing and swimming as well as plenty of biking paths. The park is particularly popular for family/friends outings, as well as a place of relaxation.
